Emerald the May Birthstone

The name is derived from the Greek smaragdos meaning "green stone". One of the earliest mines was by the Red Sea in Eygpt and has been called Cleopatra's emerald mines. It is the symbol of immortality and is said to be beneficial to the eyes.

Emeralds are classified as Type 3 clarity stones which means eye-visible inclusions are very common and expected. Larger fine color and very clean emeralds are rare and valuable.
